The ER perspective

“I translate what I see firsthand in the ER into broader conversations about health, culture and society. My work sits at the intersection of clinical medicine and real-world narratives, covering topics like addiction, mental health, sexual health, trauma, and how current events shape patient care.”

Dr. Jeff Yoo is an emergency physician, educator, researcher and medical communicator whose work spans frontline clinical medicine, healthcare quality improvement, medical education and public health communication.

Dr. Yoo spends his days caring for critically ill and injured patients in one of Canada’s busiest emergency departments. In emergency medicine, decisions are made under extreme pressure, where medical science, human vulnerability and social realities converge.

Beyond the hospital walls, he pulls back the curtain on healthcare. Through digital media, documentaries, simulated resuscitations and expert interviews, he brings transparency to emergency medicine, demystifies complex procedures and opens up critical public health conversations.

Clinical and academic work

Making emergency airway management safer.

Province-wide quality improvement

The BC Airway Registry

As a practising emergency physician in British Columbia, Dr. Yoo has focused much of his academic and quality-improvement work on improving the safety and performance of emergency airway management.

He is the project lead and one of the principal founders of the BC Airway Registry, a province-wide quality-improvement initiative that tracks emergency intubations, procedural success, complications and performance trends across participating hospitals in British Columbia.

What began as a local initiative has grown into a provincial project involving multiple major hospitals and health authorities. Dr. Yoo has played a central role in developing the registry, expanding it across the province and helping integrate standardized airway documentation directly into electronic medical records within several of British Columbia’s major health systems.

The registry allows clinicians and hospitals to better understand their performance, identify opportunities for improvement and, ultimately, make emergency airway management safer for patients.

Pandemic response

COVID-19 intubation protocols

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Yoo helped develop and evaluate emergency intubation protocols designed to protect both patients and healthcare workers during one of the most challenging periods in modern emergency medicine.

National recognition

Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians award

This work received national recognition, including an award at the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians annual scientific conference for quality-improvement work on emergency airway management during the pandemic.

Medical education

Training the next generation.

Education has remained a major part of his career. Dr. Yoo is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, where he teaches medical students, residents and other healthcare professionals.

He has also been recognized for his contributions to medical education, including a Teacher of the Year award at St. Paul’s Hospital.

Public communication

Making medicine accessible to millions.

Beyond the hospital and university, Dr. Yoo has built a large public-facing medical education platform. Across social media his audience has grown to more than 2 million followers, where he translates medicine into practical, understandable information for the general public.

His content spans emergency medicine, preventive health, navigating the healthcare system, medical misinformation, patient advocacy and conversations with specialists across a wide range of disciplines.

A central theme of his public work is making high-quality medical information more accessible. Rather than speaking only to other healthcare professionals, he focuses on helping everyday people understand how medicine works, make sense of health information and communicate more effectively with the healthcare system.
